CHAPTER 36: The Passage of Time
Emmy stood phone to ear long after Maria hung up. These were startling discoveries: Bella's obsession with youth, the time loop machines, Maria's sudden interest in opening up about Bella's schemes. What could it all mean?
There was nothing more Emmy wanted at that moment than to relax in her old room, sorting through her books and working out the new pieces to this puzzle. It wasn't going to happen, though. Her room was gone, her books wore gone. Disappeared, into thin air, like so many DiPotere homes before. Somehow Bianca and her family had survived. There was so much to do! But no time to do it, for Bianca's family was celebrating three special occasions on this night, and Emmy needed to join in the festivities. She turned to the room with a sigh, and forced a smile on her weary face.
This was a big day for the DiPotere clan. Not one, not two, but three birthdays. First, the family watched as little Caprice transitioned into a child,

then Phebe transitioned into a lovely teenager...

and finally, Joel made the change from adult to dashing elder.

Emmy tried to relax and enjoy the festivities. She was truly happy to see Bianca, and to know the legacy continued. There was an unspoken air of sadness that loomed over the party, however cheery Bianca tried to make the atmosphere. No one spoke of the missing Allie, or of the disappearance of the DiPotere house, or of the year-long absence of Emmy. These questions would wait for another day, Emmy knew. For now there was joy and love in the DiPotere house as the children and Joel prepared for the next phase of their life together.
