Chapter 35: Time Flies When You're with Bella
Red showed up like clockwork the next day to begin the renovations on Miss Emmy's house. Maria was not yet used to his presence, but she found it far more comforting than the night she just spent alone. She did not know how she would handle this new life just yet. Her nerves were raw, and she jumped at every little thing, especially the shrill of her cell phone. She could not settle herself yet, in this new place, nor could she resign herself to the fact that Emmy had left her a handyman instead of a powerful wizard as her protector. The phone still rung in her pocket, though, and Maria knew life must go on.
She eased the phone to her ear slowly, as if it were a poisonous snake ready to strike. "Hello?" said Maria.
"Maria, it's Emmy." Maria smiled at the sound of her friend's brisk voice on the other end of the phone line.
"Emmy!" said Maria, "Hold on." Maria kept Emmy waiting as she excused herself from Red's presence, escaping to the privacy of Emmy's little shack.
"Emmy, you sent me a handyman!" Maria exclaimed once inside.
"Yes, he's very good. Been with me for years now. Why, Red can fix just about anything that's broken."
"Yes, but..." began Maria.
"I'm sorry Maria, there's no time to chat. I must ask...you see I've found Bianca, and she tells me an entire year has passed since I left to go find you."
"That's Bella's time loop," said Maria. "I still don't see how a handyman can..."
"Wait, what?" interrupted Emmy. "What time loop?"
Now it was Maria's turn to be confused. "It's...well, I guess I thought you knew. The time loop is just what it sounds like...a looping of time. Bella has this machine...statue like things. The main ones are in her mansion and at her company BellTech, but there are smaller versions all over Strangetown. Time just keeps cycling, although most people live their lives blissfully unaware. That's Bella's doing too. A spell of some sort. Haven't you ever noticed how the people in Strangetown never seem to age?"
Emmy was speechless. She suddenly realized she had never paid much attention to the townies, as they were called. She'd been so focused on her life's pursuit...so focused on protecting the DiPoteres.
Emmy snapped back to awareness as she reailized Maria was still talking on the other end of the phone line.
"...just one hour," Maria was saying, "one tiny hour in Bella's world can equal a week, a month, or more. What you must know about Bella, Emmy, is this. Her greatest goal in life isn't stealing the powers of others...it's the preservation of her own beauty...at any cost."
