Chapter Seven: What about Red?
Maria's life seemed to be in a perpetual state of limbo. The repairs and additions to Miss Emmy's old shack were coming along just fine, what with Red showing up early every day and usually staying late as well. The bare walls weren't the problem. The fact that she was living with random bits of furniture and no carpeting, things that would drive an average person mad...well, those didn't bother Maria at all. In fact, she wished the house would never be finished, because then, Red would never leave.
That strange little man with the strange hair and strange clothes had weaseled his way into her heart. Nevermind that he was just a handyman and not some great witch sent to protect her.
He made her feel safe.
And as the house got closer and closer to being done, all Maria could think about was how sad she would be when he left.
