Chapter Twenty-Eight: Choosing Sides
Maria's heart filled with pain at the memories she knew, and horror at those she was seeing for the first time. Bella with her father, driving her father from her mother, Bella with Mirabella, her precious sister...Then, Bella's dog off to find Mira, to kill her...Now, Bella stalking Bianca, Bella after Allie, Bella cursing Maria herself...
Suddenly, there was no more time for memories. Bella had appeared at the foot of the stairs, and she was ready for battle.
"You!" she screamed, her voice filled with rage. "How dare you come into my house old woman. Old fool! We will kill you now, and my curse will soon be fulfilled! Maria, kill her...she is the enemy!"
Maria stood, quiet and still.
"Maria!" said Bella, with growing alarm, "Maria, kill the old woman!"
Maria looked at Miss Emmy for guidance. Bella's rage, the source of her power, was growing by the second. Soon she would have enough energy to kill them both where they stood. "Now is not the time for battle," said Miss Emmy.
"What do we do?" whispered Maria.
"We run!"
Emmy tore out of the house, calling on the spirits of good to protect her and Maria. The time for a great battle would soon be near, but not today. Maria is too weak, Emmy thought. With a flash of insight, Emmy paused to look back.
Maria stood at the top of the stair, hesitant to leave. "Maria," Emmy called out. "Maria, you must choose! This is your moment. You must decide now."
Maria's eyes filled with tears. "There's no time for that now," said Emmy. "Choose what is in your heart." With that, Emmy was gone, running into the moonlit night.
Maria did. She ran down the stairs and after the distant figure of Miss Emmy, leaving Bella and her evil world behind.
"Curse you Emmy!" howled Bella from her doorway as she watched the figures disappear into the night. "I will have my revenge!"
