Chapter Twenty-Seven:
Maria turned away from Emmy. Her voice grew small and weak. "I don't understand," she said.
"I know," said Miss Emmy. Compassion flooded her face as she looked at the young woman before her. "I know it's hard, dear, but look at what I have to show. Look, and understand." Miss Emmy stood before Maria now, not the elderly friend Maria once knew, but as a great and powerful witch. "I can heal you, dear, I can bring you back, but you must trust me."
"Miss Emmy, I'm so sorry," said Maria as tears welled in her listless eyes.
"No time for tears now, Maria," said Emmy. "Come close child, and listen as I show you the truth."
Maria allowed Emmy to lean in and whisper in her ear. As the old woman spoke, Maria was flooded with images...images of her life, of her family, of her past...
