Chapter Two: Allie's Side
"Hey, you! You wanna ride?"
The car that pulled alongside Allie slowed to a crawl, and its young male inhabitants waved frantically at Allie as she plodded along through the endless rain. She kept her head down and her hands in her pockets, hoping the boys would give up and go away.
"Hey! Girl! Aren't you cold?"
The boy was getting out of the car now, and Allie froze, the bubble of panic rising into her throat. She did what she'd learned to do over the past few weeks. She ran.
"Hey!" yelled the boy. "I just want to help you!"
Allie hesitated and turned back for a moment. Allie was scared, but she was also cold, actually much more than cold. She was freezing. Icy rain had pelted her for hours now, and Allie had no place to go. She shot a sideways glance at the boys -- half invitation, half warning.
The boy coming closer to her was young, but still older than her by at least a year. He looked goth, or maybe punk, with fierce clothing and jet black hair. His eyes were lined with a hard-edged black, but the eyes themselves were soft and pleading...as if she were some lost puppy he could take home and rescue. Allie tucked her head and walked on.
She was no puppy, damn it! Whe was a powerful witch! But still...she was so cold. Could witches die of hypothermia? Allie figured they probably could.
She glanced at the boy getting back into the run-down car. They were about to give up, she could tell.
"Wait!" she yelled, waving as the car pulled away. The boys stopped and the passenger happily hopped out to make room for Allie to get in the back seat.
As the boys pulled away from the curb, Allie didn't know what kind of a decision she'd just made. It could be the smartest, or the dumbest, decision of her young life. Either way, she wouldn't know for a while, so, snug and warm in the little car, Allie drifted off wondering about the boy who'd just possibly saved her life.
