Chapter Thirteen - The Blogger Miss Emmy told Bianca to meet her in the wing of the DiPotere house which had become Emmy's domain. Bianca thought of all the times she and Joel had stayed up late giggling about what could be behind that forbidden locked door, and now that she stood upon its threshold, Bianca wasn't sure she wanted to find out. Armed with nothing but the stack of papers that contained a print version of Mirabella DiPotere's online blog, Bianca took a deep breath and opened the door. It was official. Bianca could finally tell Joel with 99% certainty that Miss Emmy was a witch. "Bianca! Welcome! I trust you found the journal?" The sight of Miss Emmy...gentle caretaker of her daughter Allie and one-time town fortuneteller...in her 'natural surroundings' as it were, took Bianca by surprise. There was something different...powerful...about Miss Emmy, something Bianca had never notided before this very moment. "Yes, Emmy," said Bianca, handing over the stack of papers. "Here they are." Emmy wasted no time in sitting down to read of her long-lost charges adventures in life. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Entry #1 -- It's Me! Well, it's me -- Mirabella DiPotere. I've never kept a journal before, but mom got me this computer right before...well, we'll get to that. Anyway, she wanted me to start writing about my life, so that one day I could pass everything on to the next generation. (Aaaack! Can you imagine me with a kid? Too funny!) Although, Maria's mine to look after now. She's so amazing, that sister of mine. She could be anything, anything at all. Me, I could barely keep my grades above a D! College? Oh, I don't think college is for me. All I wanted in life is to uncover the...the WITCH behind this DiPotere Curse. Although, I guess I'm a witch too, or at least I have some powers...but I'm really getting ahead of myself. -------------------------- Entry #2 - Transitions So much happened after Maria transitioned into teen-hood. And, like I said, I'm new at this blogging thing, but I'll give it a shot. Mom and I spent so much time talking about the magic of life, and all of the special powers I could tap into as a DiPotere. She had discovered the money trees and special elixer water, but Mom said there was so much more out there for me to explore. Maria had her share of adventures, too, like the time she set the stove on fire cooking a tv dinner. Luckily, Mom and Dad were there to put the fire out. They even had it out before the fireman got there. I always thought Mom and Dad were so perfect together. But, I guess I was wrong about that. One night Mom sent Dad away. She said it wasn't any one's fault, really, just that it had to do with the curse and she didn't want to go into it. Dad looked so sad as he got into the cab that night, and I figured Mom would explain everything when she was ready. She just never got the chance. One night, as Mom got out of the car from work, a dark figure appeared out of nowhere. Maria and I watched helplessly as Death came for our Mother. At first Mom looked horrified... but as she began to pass over, Mom looked ready. Maria and I, though, were another story. I really tried hard to put on a brave face for Maria, but... I had no idea what I was going to do. ------------------------- Entry #3 - I am the Heiress Maria and I took to sleeping in Mom and Dad's old bed. I was heartbroken, but Maria was crushed. I took it upon myself, as the DiPotere Heiress to make things feel as normal as they could. Dad would come over whenever I called (he had moved just down the block). I thought about asking him to move back in with us, but it just didn't seem like an option. Mom had her reasons, so I had to trust that. I worked so hard, and drank my body weight in espresso. Call me crazy, but I felt Mom's presence everywhere. To give Maria something else to focus on, I invited the headmaster of StrangeTown's exclusive private school over for dinner. I didn't realize how badly Maria wanted this opportunity until I saw how amazing she looked. She really went all out for the headmaster. And she was so shy! She has an outgoing personality - a real 10 - why would she be so shy? In a creepy sort of way, he seemed taken with her too. Ew. But, whatever, it worked. The headmaster even called Maria the next day to chat. Maria worked hard too, trying to help earn enough for another jug of elixer so that I could have more teen time. I had no idea how much work it was to make magic happen. We were so close, too...we just had enough to get the vial of elixer, when... ----------------------------------- Entry #4 - Mirabella the Adult Here I am...Mirabella the adult! AAAAAAACK! First, as an official grown-up type person, I decided to get a job. Luckily, I was able to get a job in my preferred career field right away. Um, did you say luckily? Yes, I said "luckily!" I don't aspire to be a hot dog slinger forever, you know. Someday I'll be a celebrity chef! I still tried to make time to help Maria with her school work, just like Mom and Dad would have done if they were there. She's so smart, though, I felt kind of silly trying to help her at all. Doesn't Maria look gorgeous here in her new private school uniform? I felt kind of bad sometimes, thinking of all the time I held Maria back from her dream...my grades were so bad the headmaster wouldn't even come to the house for a visit! But that's in the past now, isn't it!?! Maria and I were really getting the hang of this DiPotere power thing. We even came up with a thinking cap, which enhanced our ability to learn. I put that crazy thing on once to learn some mechanical skills, but Maria - Knowledge Sim that she is - wore it all the time: Honestly, some days I had to remind her to take it off before she went to school! So, that was pretty much our life. I still worked hard on the potions and money trees that Miss Emmy taught me as a child, but I know I could have spent more time working on the mystery of the curse. I just wish there was a way for Mom to have tell me what she had discovered... --------------------------------- Enrtry # 5 - Dad's New Girlfriend I have to admit the week started well. FINALLY, the promotion to Manager. It was a small step toward my dream of one day becoming a celebrity chef, but a step nonetheless. The next day, Dad invited me over to his house to celebrate my promotion. When I got there, though, it seemed like no one was home. I used the spare key to let myself in to use the bathroom. It was a little surprising to hear soft jazz coming from Dad's stereo...he was always more of a rock 'n roll guy. The jazz mystery was solved the second I walked out of the bathroom and saw Dad whispering with his new girlfriend, Bella. When Dad finally noticed me, he seemed confused. "Mira, sweetie...what are you...?" "Um, the celebration breakfast? The one YOU told ME to come over for?" "Oh, Mira...oh gosh, I'm sorry...I..." "Dad, come on. I mean, you're still in your pajamas! It's the middle of the morning!" I'd had it. I'd had it with Dad's flaky behavior. I'd had it with his strange new girlfriend. So I left. There was something about Dad's girlfriend Bella I didn't like...something so familiar, yet eerie...I just couldn't figure her out. As I walked away from Dad's house, it seemed Bella was already helping him forget our argument. Ugh. Dad called later that day, but I was done. I am done. "Dad I don't know what happened to you. That woman...that Bella...she's done something to you. I can't believe you don't see it!" "Dad...no more. I can't take it. Maria can't take it. No more of you and your weird behavior, and especially no more Bella! And he hung up on me. My own father hung up on me. Even with the distractions of life and work and all our little fluffball cats, I couldn't shake my irritation with Dad. But there was more...I had this constant feeling someone, somewhere, was watching me. --------------------------- Entry #6 - Obsessions and Evil I was so mad at Dad then. I'm still mad today. How could he? How could he leave us? How could he be with that evil woman? I knew there was something not right about that Bella woman from the moment I saw her, and now I have proof. As I watched Maria do her homework one night, I started thinking about Dad, and how much Maria missed him. Oh, she would never complain, but I knew it hurt her. I kept thinking about Dad, and Maria, and I was determined to do something to fix the situation once and for all. Maria was becoming obessesed. She painted night... ...and day. She was getting good, but there was something sad about her work. She also spent more and more time by mother's grave. Her anguish was almost unbearable to watch. We decided it was time for her to go to college. There was one final breakfast today, and I watched my precious baby sister go off to start her new life. As she waved goodbye from the cab, I knew it was go time. The rest of the afternoon I prepared. I was going to get the evidence I needed on Bella...one way or another. After driving to a secluded spot where I could watch for Bella's arrival home, I hunkered down and prepared to wait. I waited. And I waited. My persistence paid off. As Bella approached her home, I found a large tropical shrub to hide in, and watched. What I saw I couldn't believe. I watched as Bella entered the house. She made a beeline for Dad, and suddenly slipped into some sort of trance. Dad, who used to be so brave and so strong, trembled in fear. When Bella emerged from the trance, she sat on the sofa and Dad began working out like a madman. Bella just sat. I was to find out only too soon this was merely a distraction. A distraction which served to keep Dad from seeing what she would do next. Bella walked out onto their small deck and a large dog with glowing eyes appeared. She raised her hand, and the dog's eyes glowed brighter as he stood transfixed. When she lowered her hand, off the dog ran. Off the deck he went, and across the lawn... ...and straight to where I stood!
I tried to hide, but it was too late. The dog knew where I was, and Bella had sent him to kill me. I could only sit, paralyzed with fear as the same reaper who had taken my mother, came for me. So, now you know my secret. I am dead and gone. Maria is through college now; I have watched her grow into a beautiful young woman. But she is in danger...the gravest of danger, and she doesn't even realize. Maria has moved in with Bella and Father. And there's nothing I can do to save her. And so I plead, in the only way a ghost can...through the electronic world of the internet. Little did I know, when Mother gave me the computer so many years ago that it would become my saving grace, for we sad creatures known as ghosts can communicate quite easily through electrical devices. It has taken me a while, but now my story is there for the world to read, and I beg of you...there must be a DiPotere woman left, somewhere, who can help break the curse. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Emmy stared at the pages for a long while. Finally she stood up and looked at Bianca. "I'm so sorry," was all she said, and Bianca watched as Emmy disappeared upstairs. All she could do was sit and wait for Emmy's return. ~*~ ~*~ If you would like to be notified of updates via email, drop me a line at pieridae.red@gmail.com with "DiPotere" in the subject line ~*~ |
